The pods are similar to chiltepins, suggesting that this plant represents a very primitive type of baccatum that was (and still is) spread by birds. It has very large leaves in relation to the pods.
 
The pods fall easily off the stem when ripe.  Very prolific.  One of my favorites that I grow every year.  I keep a jar of dried pods in the kitchen.
